01 - How we got here
The long way round to a Christchurch build business.
John's first job was in a landscape supplies yard - operating machinery, running the counter, learning what each product actually did on a site, and dealing with tradespeople over the counter every day. That's where the grounding actually started. Ground-work, timber, machinery, and how to talk to customers who needed a straight answer. Not on a site, not in a classroom. In a yard.
From there John moved into high-end landscaping for a few years, then started studying Construction Management and Quantity Surveying - still landscaping full-time through the coursework. The QS side of that is where the attention to scope, cost and paperwork comes from. The quote you get from us is the price you pay, not the price we opened with.
After the study came a building apprenticeship. Weekend jobs started coming in while the apprenticeship was still running - from people who wanted the work done properly and liked the way we ran a site. That's how this business started. No launch plan, no business card handed out at a networking event - just jobs that kept coming back because the last one was done right.
