Kwila Decks
Tropical hardwood. Deep red-brown fresh, mellows to silver-grey over time if left unoiled. The material we recommend most for visible, north-facing decks.
Custom deck builder based in Christchurch. Kwila, composite, low-level, elevated, pool decks and multi-level builds across Canterbury. Ten-year structural guarantee on every build.
Timber, composite or hardwood. Low-level, elevated, pool, multi-level. Integrated steps, lighting, built-in bars and seating.
Tropical hardwood. Deep red-brown fresh, mellows to silver-grey over time if left unoiled. The material we recommend most for visible, north-facing decks.
Capped composite boards - no oiling, no sanding, no staining. Fire-rated, slip-resistant, colour-stable. Best pick for pool surrounds, rentals, and any deck that won't get regular maintenance.
Vitex, Garapa and other hardwoods where Kwila doesn't fit the sightline or budget. Same structural framing underneath, different timber character on top.
Ground-level platforms built to handle the moisture and ground contact that comes with being close to the earth. The right framing and ground prep underneath so the deck lasts, not just looks good on day one.
Raised decks, steps, handrails, balustrades - properly piled and set in concrete. Handles slopes, views, and the drop off the back of a Fendalton or Cashmere section.
Composite or heat-treated timber, slip-resistant, laid to coordinate with pool-fencing compliance. We handle the deck and the pool fence in one build.
Most Christchurch decks fail for the same two or three reasons - wrong materials underneath, weak foundations, and fixings that rust through. Here's what we do differently.
Proper structural piles on every build. Not fence posts, not shortcuts.
Low-level decks get framing rated for ground contact - standard timber rots, ours doesn't.
No rust bleed, no black streaks running down the face of the timber a year in.
We've settled on a supplier whose boards don't cup and don't fail. It shows in the finish.
Permeable weedmat for long-term weed control without trapping moisture against the framing.
A deck oil that lasts. Available as a standalone service for existing decks too.
Six stages from first phone call to the day the ten-year structural guarantee kicks in. No surprises on the invoice.
We come to you, walk the section, measure up. Talk through what the deck needs to do - entertain, catch afternoon sun, flow off the living room, hold a hot tub. Material and layout suggestion based on the sightline from the house and the orientation of the section.
Written quote through within the week. Line items for framing, decking, finish, built-in features, consent fees if applicable. What you pay is what we quoted - we don't start low and drift north.
Kwila ordered from the sawmill. Composite direct from the supplier. If the deck needs a building consent (over 1.5m to deck surface, or attached to certain wall structures) we handle the drawings, submission and inspections. If it doesn't, we'll tell you and save you the fee.
Site marked out. Digger in where access allows. Structural piles set in concrete, ground-contact rated framing on low-level builds. Everything squared up and checked before any boards touch it.
Board direction chosen for the primary sightline from inside. Steps, lighting conduits, balustrades and any built-in bars, planters or bench seating.
Oiled on Kwila and hardwood. Weedmat laid under the deck on low-level builds. Full site clean. Care notes handed over. Ten-year structural guarantee signed off.
Every deck is quoted individually after a site visit. There's no flat per-square-metre rate because these variables move the number up and down. The list below is what we look at when we walk your section.
Pine is the cheapest entry point. Kwila sits mid-to-high. Composite is the highest upfront but the lowest lifetime maintenance cost - no oiling, no sanding, no staining.
Low-level decks need SG8 joists and weedmat - extra material, extra time. Elevated decks need H5 piles, balustrades, and potentially a building consent over 1.5m. Mid-height decks are usually the quickest.
Rectangular with a single step is the cheapest build per square metre. Multi-level, wrap-around, or decks with integrated stairs and benches add framing time and detail cuts. Bigger isn't always proportionally more expensive - small decks carry fixed setup costs that don't scale down.
Can we wheelbarrow materials through the side gate, or do we need the 1T digger? Tight access adds time but not always cost - we've worked plenty of sections other builders walked away from.
Built-in bars, planter boxes, integrated bench seating, lighting conduits, hidden fixings, pergola or louvre framing overhead - each adds scope and cost, but they're usually cheaper done at build time than retrofitted later.
Decks over 1.5m off the ground, or attached to certain wall structures, need a building consent. Council fees, drawings and inspection costs are itemised separately on the quote.
Kwila and hardwood get a first coat of CD50 oil. Composite needs no finish. Pine decks can be stained or left to weather silver.
Straight answers to the things homeowners ask us most often. If your question isn't here, call John - he'll give you a straight answer, not a sales line.
Every deck we build is quoted after a site visit - there's no one-rate-fits-all figure because the variables (material, height, size, access, features, consent) move the number significantly. As a rough guide, a standard low-level pine deck with no extras is our cheapest build. A multi-level Kwila deck with integrated stairs, balustrades and a built-in bar is our highest. See the Pricing section above for the variables, or book a free site visit for a fixed quote on your section.
Kwila looks and feels like a proper hardwood deck, and ages beautifully with one coat of CD50 oil a year. Composite needs no oiling at all, but it doesn't have the same depth of grain. For most Christchurch homeowners we'll recommend Kwila on the north-facing, visible decks, and composite for pool surrounds, rentals, and decks that won't get regular maintenance.
Decks over 1.5m off the ground need a building consent. So do decks attached to certain wall structures. Below 1.5m and freestanding - usually not. We'll tell you on the site visit, and if a consent is needed, we handle the drawings, submission and inspections ourselves rather than leave it with you.
Most residential decks run two to four weeks on site once materials arrive. Materials usually land one to two weeks after the deposit. A full outdoor-living build (deck plus pergola or louvre plus fence plus retaining) runs four to eight weeks depending on scale and access.
We build across the Christchurch urban area and wider Canterbury - Halswell, Fendalton, Merivale, Redwood, Rolleston, Papanui, St Albans, Prestons, Marshlands, Rangiora, Ravenswood, Casebrook, Harewood, Redcliffs, Sumner, Kaiapoi, Ohoka, Cust, Yaldhurst, West Melton, and everywhere in between. We also travel further across Canterbury and the wider South Island for the right build.
Our 1T Kubota digger goes down to 750mm - narrower than most side gates. We bring it onsite for ground clearance under decks, pile holes on sloped sections, and tight-section landscaping. If we can't get it through, we'll tell you on the site visit and adjust the approach rather than walk away from the job.
Ten years on the structural work - framing, piles, joists, fixings. That sits on top of the individual manufacturer warranties for composite boards, hardware and louvre systems. $2M public liability covers us and you through the whole build.
Yes - that's most of our work. Same crew, same build, coordinated timeline. Cheaper and faster than hiring separate trades, and the joins between deck, fence and retaining actually align because the same team set both out. See our fence builder, louvre and covered roof and timber retaining wall pages for the rest.
