Backyard Remodels
Full outdoor overhauls - demolish, re-grade, rebuild the deck, run new fencing, step in retaining, finish the landscape. One quote, one timeline.
Landscape and deck builder based in Christchurch. Backyard remodels, hard landscaping, retaining, paths and planter beds - handled alongside the deck, fence or retaining wall as part of one build.
We're builders first, landscapers second. If you want a boutique garden designer with a planting list three pages long, that's not us. If you want someone to rebuild the back section, lay the deck, run the fence, set the retaining and finish the landscaping so it all ties in - that's exactly what we do.
Full outdoor overhauls - demolish, re-grade, rebuild the deck, run new fencing, step in retaining, finish the landscape. One quote, one timeline.
Retaining walls, steps, paths, pads, edging. The structural side of landscaping - proper footings, proper drainage, treated timber where it meets the ground. Built to the same standard as the deck, not to landscape-grade shortcuts.
Levelling sloped sections, correcting drainage runs, soil prep before turf or planting. Our 1T Kubota digger fits through most side gates; bigger jobs we sub-contract in heavier machinery.
Raised planter boxes, garden edges and hedging walls, built from timber rated for ground contact so they last. The carpentry that lifts a garden from a patch of soil to a framed planting bed.
Topsoil laid at the right depth, levelled, then seeded or rolled-out turf. Standard residential lawn through to full turf installs.
Timber paths, concrete pads, river-stone borders, permeable gravel. Coordinated with the deck steps and the fence runs so every transition squares up at the right height.
We're upfront about what we handle and what sits outside our scope. Makes it easier to work out if we're the right fit before the site visit.
The hard landscaping and groundwork side - built to the same standard as the deck.
We'd rather tell you upfront than pretend and do it poorly. Happy to recommend Christchurch contractors we trust.
Landscape work done without proper drainage, footings or the right timber fails in the usual ways. Retaining leans. Paths sink. Edges rot. Lawns wash out in the first nor'wester. Here's what we do differently.
Retaining, steps, paths and pads built with proper footings, correct drainage and the right timber where it meets the ground. No shortcuts.
Section fall, soakage, surface water runoff all worked through before a load of topsoil lands. Fixes the thing most landscape rebuilds forget about.
Deck, fence, retaining and landscaping all part of one build. Transitions between surfaces actually line up. One timeline, one point of contact.
If your job needs a specialist designer or a specific trade, we'll tell you upfront. We don't pretend to be what we're not.
Six stages from first phone call through to the day we hand over care notes. No surprises on the invoice.
We walk the section with you, talk through what it has to do - entertain, kids' playspace, low-maintenance, catch the afternoon sun. Work out what's staying, what's going, and whether you need a landscape designer's plan or a clear sketch.
Written quote through within the week, itemised by phase - demolition, earthworks, hard landscaping, soft landscaping, finish. Everything laid out so you can see where each line lands.
Old decks, tired retaining, overgrown garden beds, broken paving - out. Green waste and rubbish handled. Site surveyed and set out before anything new goes in.
Section levelled, soakage and fall corrected, soil prep done. Digger in where access allows. Drainage runs laid before the hard landscaping goes down. This is the step most projects skip - and it's why landscapes fail in year two.
Retaining, paths, pads, steps, timber edges, planter boxes. Built to the same structural standard as the deck. Transitions between surfaces squared up so the deck steps meet the path at the right height.
Topsoil laid at the right depth. Turf rolled out or seed sown. Plantings in as specified. Care notes handed over for the first season.
Every landscape build is quoted individually after a site visit. There's no flat per-square-metre rate because these variables move the number around - and the range between a planter-bed refresh and a full backyard remodel is enormous.
Retaining walls, paths, paving, pads and steps are the big cost drivers. A short retaining run with one path is a fraction of a full terraced section with steps, paving and multiple garden walls.
Flat sections are cheap to prep. Sloped, wet or clay-heavy sections add time and truckloads - and if the digger can't fit through the side gate, we're wheelbarrowing everything. This is the step most quotes under-estimate.
Sections that pond, seep or flood under a nor'wester need subsoil drains, soakage pits or re-graded falls worked in before the topsoil goes down. Done right it's invisible; done wrong the landscape fails in year one.
A few planter beds is cheap. A full garden with mass plantings, mulched beds and specimen trees is an order of magnitude more. Turf or seed, natives or ornamental, irrigation or none - each choice moves the quote.
Landscaping alongside a deck, fence or retaining build is usually cheaper than standalone - shared site setup, shared dig, shared waste disposal. Single-element landscape jobs carry their own setup cost.
Jobs needing a landscape designer, a specialist turf contractor or a drainage engineer have those line items shown separately on the quote - no hidden markup. You see exactly what the specialist costs.
Straight answers to the things homeowners ask us most often. If your question isn't here, call John - he'll give you a straight answer, not a sales line.
Every landscape build is quoted after a site visit - cost moves with scope, grading, drainage, hard landscaping, soft landscaping and coordination with other works. A small planter-bed and edging refresh is our cheapest job. A full backyard remodel - demolition, earthworks, retaining, paths, deck, fence, turf, plantings - is our highest. See the Pricing section above for the variables.
Either. We do full backyard remodels - demolition through to final turf and handover - and we do single-element jobs like a retaining wall, a set of steps, or a planter bed run. Works out cheaper and cleaner when the whole job is one quote, but we'll do a piece of it if that's what's needed.
Both, depending on scope. Straightforward remodels we'll sketch and talk through at the site visit. For design-led jobs we work from a landscape designer's plan - either yours or one we bring in. We're not a boutique design studio, so if you want full CAD drawings and a five-page planting list, we'll pass that through to a specialist designer.
Basic plantings, yes - hedging, structural plants, turf. For specialist horticultural selection (mixed-species mass plantings, natives with exacting soil needs, specimen trees) we'll sub-contract a specialist or work from a planting plan you've had drawn up. Honest about what we do well.
Most residential backyard remodels run four to eight weeks on site once materials land. A full build - demolition, earthworks, deck, fence, retaining, landscape - can run eight to twelve weeks depending on scale and access. Single-element landscape jobs (planter run, path, timber edging) usually run three to ten days.
We work across the Christchurch urban area and wider Canterbury - Halswell, Fendalton, Merivale, Redwood, Rolleston, Papanui, St Albans, Prestons, Marshlands, Rangiora, Ravenswood, Casebrook, Harewood, Redcliffs, Sumner, Kaiapoi, Ohoka, Cust, Yaldhurst, West Melton and everywhere in between. We also travel further across Canterbury and the wider South Island.
Drainage gets worked through at the quote. If the section floods in a nor'wester, ponds in winter or has clay right under the topsoil, we'll design in subsoil drains, soakage pits or a re-graded fall. Fixing drainage up front is cheaper than pulling a landscape out in year two to redo it.
Yes - that's our strongest scope. Same crew, coordinated timeline, shared site setup. Transitions between deck, fence, retaining and landscape actually line up because the same team sets out the levels. See our deck building, fence builder, louvre and covered roof and timber retaining wall pages for the rest.
No - build only. We can recommend maintenance contractors in Christchurch for ongoing mowing, pruning and planting upkeep. Keeps us focused on the building side of landscaping, which is what we do best.
